Permalinks for Online Services

This guide will show how to obtain permalinks to journal articles, ebooks and ebook chapters, and videos found in the Library's online research services. Permalinks can be used to create links to learning objects in Canvas courses.

EBSCO Journal Articles

EBSCO is one of the main vendors the Library uses to provide access to journal literature and ebooks. If you look through this list of EBSCO services on our Online Research A-Z pages, you'll see many familiar names, such as Academic Search Complete, Humanities Source, and Education Source. The Discovery GALILEO search tool on the Library's homepage also uses an EBSCO interface.

In any EBSCO service, you can easily find the permalink to a journal article. How you find the permalink is the same in Discovery GALILEO as in individual EBSCO services.

Let's take this example: "Life and Financial Planning in the Time of COVID-19" (click on the link to see this live).

1. From this display on the brief results screen, click on the title or on the PDF icon. Either way, you'll arrive at the same place.

2. At the next screen, called the Detailed Record, look towards the bottom of the stack of icons on the right side of the screen. The arrow is pointing to the Permalink Tool, represented by a pair of chain links.

3. Click on the Permalink Tool and the part of the screen above the title changes to show the permalink you can use.

Click once in the Permalink field to highlight its content and press CTRL-C to copy the permalink to the clipboard.

Then you can paste the URL wherever you want using CTRL-V.

EBSCO Ebooks

Finding a permalink for EBSCO ebooks is very similar to finding a permalink for a journal article. Let's take the case of this one: Scorpionates: The Coordination Chemistry Of Polypyrazolylborate Ligands (click on the link to see this live).

1. From this display on the brief results screen, click on the title or on the PDF icon. Either way, you'll arrive at the same place.

2. Find the Permalink tool, at the bottom right, where the arrow is pointing.

3. Click on the Permalink tool and the part of the screen above the title changes to show a permalink you can use, just as we saw with journal articles. Click once in the Permalink field to highlight its content and press CTRL-C to copy the permalink to the clipboard. Then you can paste the URL wherever you want using CTRL-V.

EBSCO Ebook Chapters

Finding the permalink for an individual EBSCO ebook chapter adds a couple of steps. You'll start with the Table of Contents, and there is more than one way to get there. We recommend the following method:

Let's continue with Scorpionates: The Coordination Chemistry Of Polypyrazolylborate Ligands (click on the link to see this live).

1. From this display on the brief results screen, click on the title or on the PDF icon. Either way, you'll arrive at the same place.

2. Once you reach the full Detailed Record screen for the ebook, click on the PDF icon on the left, rather than Permalink icon as before.

3. The full display of the ebook will appear and the Table of Contents will be displayed in the left-hand column. If you want the permalink for Chapter 3, for instance, click on the chapter title: Applications of Scorpionate Ligands.

4. When the chapter is displayed, the location of the Permalink icon changes to the navigation bar above the text frame. Click on the icon and the permalink will appear. You can copy it using CTRL-C and then paste it with CTRL-V where ever it is needed.
