Permalinks for Online Services

This guide will show how to obtain permalinks to journal articles, ebooks and ebook chapters, and videos found in the Library's online research services. Permalinks can be used to create links to learning objects in Canvas courses.

SAGE Journal Articles

SAGE Publications is a very important publisher of international English-language journals in all disciplines, especially the social sciences. SAGE Premier All Access Journal Collection is the service to which the Library subscribes. Like JSTOR, SAGE doesn't provide complete permalinks that invoke OpenAthens authentication. You have to create a SAGE permalink yourself. Fortunately, it is very easy to do; the method is the same for JSTOR.

1. From this display on the brief results screen, click on the title "Mobility, Disability, and Social Engagement in Older Adults" (click the link to follow live).

2. At the full display shown below, look where the arrow is pointing. That DOI (digitial object identifier) is the basis of the permalink you will create. Highlight it and press CTRL-C to copy it to the clipboard.

3. Now, visit the OpenAthens Link Generator for Piedmont University. (OpenAthens is our user authentication service. OA also dictates how permalinks must be formed.)

4. Paste your URL using CTRL-V into the Enter Your Links field, where the arrow in pointing. (You will not need to press Enter to produce your OpenAthens permalink.)

5. Click the Copy button to copy it to the clipboard. You can now use this URL to create a stable link in a Canvas page or a Word document or whatever other use you'd like to make of it.

SAGE Knowledge Ebooks

The Library has purchased several foundational reference books for social sciences and education research methodology that are accessible through SAGE Publications' SAGE Knowledge platform. Like JSTOR, SAGE Knowledge doesn't provide complete permalinks that invoke OpenAthens authentication. You have to create a SAGE Knowledge permalink yourself. Fortunately, the method is the same as in JSTOR and SAGE Journals.

Let's take the example of The SAGE Handbook of African-American Education (click the link to see this live).

1. From this brief record display, click the title link.

2. When the full display appears, look down the right side of the page for the Get Link button and click it.

3. Then click the Copy to Clipboard link to copy the permalink to the clipboard.

4. Now, visit the OpenAthens Link Generator for Piedmont University. (OpenAthens is our user authentication service. OA also dictates how permalinks must be formed.) Paste your URL using CTRL-V into the Enter Your Links field, where the arrow is pointing. (You don't need to press Enter to produce your OpenAthens permalink; the action of pasting creates your permalink.)

5. Click the Copy button to copy it to the clipboard. You can now use this URL to create a stable link in a Canvas page or a Word document or whatever other use you'd like to make of it.

SAGE Research Methods Ebooks

Piedmont University has purchased access to over 1,000 ebooks that are accessible through the SAGE Research Methods (SRM) platform, including SAGE's Green books and Blue Books and many high-level works about all aspects of qualitative and quantitative research in the social sciences. SRM also includes numerous video presentations on qualitative and quantitative research by noted experts.

Like JSTOR, SRM doesn't provide complete permalinks that invoke OpenAthens authentication. You have to create an SRM permalink yourself. Fortunately, it is very easy to do and uses the same method as JSTOR and SAGE Journals.

Let's take the example of a title from SAGE's highly regarded "Little Blue Books" series about qualitative research: Case Study Methods by Hamel, Dufour & Fortin (click the link to see this live).

1. From this brief record display, click the title link.

2. When you reach the full display, highlight the DOI (Digital Object Identifier) and press CTRL-C to copy it to the clipboard.

3. Now, refer to steps 4-5 above and visit the OpenAthens Link Generator. This will provide you with a stable link that leads to the homepage of Case Study Methods.

4. To obtain a permalink for an individual chapter, click on the Chapters tab and then scroll down the page to the chapter title you're interested in and click on it.

5. When the chapter opens, highlight and copy the DOI and follow the same process to create a permalink, using the OpenAthens Link Generator.
