Artstor

The Artstor Digital Library is a online digital image library designed to serve educational and scholarly communities with nearly two million images from the collections of all types of museums from around the world.

What are Folders?

FOLDERS are containers to save, organize and share image groups; there are three types.

Private Folders and My Work Folder -- Image groups in these folders can only be viewed and edited by the user who created them. Every user with a registered account has a private folder that cannot be deleted or renamed called the My Work Folder where he or she can work with image groups.

Users with instructor-level privileges can also create additional private workspaces called Private Folders.

Institutional Folders -- Institutional folders are a way for users with instructor privileges to share image groups with others at their institution. Instructors can control who can see and edit these folders.

Instructors can also choose to enable Student Work Folders, a space for each student in a course where he/she can share work and feedback.

Global Folders -- Global folders are a way for Artstor to share image content and teaching resources with their subscribers. They contain content created by scholars and Artstor staff to showcase how the Digital Library is used in teaching and research.

The contents of Global Folders can provide inspiration for those teaching with Artstor. Global folders can be accessed by anyone who uses the Digital Library.

Creating Image Groups

IMAGE GROUPS allow you to save images you would like to work with later and add a description to that group. They can be used to gather and organize images for a paper or presentation you are working on, or to bring together examples of artwork from a given medium or style as a source of inspiration for your own artwork.

Creating an image group also allows you to share and work with images--once you have created an image group, you can print it, download the group as JPG files or a PowerPoint presentation, create stable URLs to the image group, create a presentation of the image group using Artstor's Offline Image Viewer (OIV), or open the group on your mobile device.

To create an image group:

  • Log in to your Artstor account. You must have a registered account to create image groups.
  • Perform a search and click on the thumbnail images in the results to select those you wish to add to the group.
  • Choose Organize from the navigation menu at the top of the page.
  • Save the selected images to a new, existing or recently opened group.

  • A new window will open, displaying a list of the available folders and existing image groups.
  • Click the image group title to select a destination and click Save at the bottom of the window to save your changes. Or, you can click the Save & Open button to view your saved group as a page of thumbnails.
