The Library's Latest!

Book of the Week, 3/13 - 3/17

Hi, if we haven’t met yet, I’m Davy – I’m a librarian here at Piedmont, and I’m going to try something new. Each week on the blog and the app, say on Tuesday or Thursday, I’ll highlight a book in our collection (something you could check out if you want). The goal is to call attention to interesting acquisitions both new and old, and to celebrate that modest and wonderful thing we often take for granted, the printed book.

We’ll start with a recent novel that was probably the best thing I read last year: Demon Copperhead, by Barbara Kingsolver.

Demon Copperhead owes its funny name to -- well, obviously, its main character -- but more importantly to Charles Dickens’ David Copperfield, who provided Kingsolver with the inspiration for this tale. Her novel is a retelling, transporting the boy from the boarding schools and warehouses of London to the trailer parks and pill mills of modern-day Appalachia.
